Abstract

In this research work, computation of strength capacity of wide reinforced concrete (RC) beams was studied. Four design codes, ACI 318M-08, Eurocode 2-2004, AASHTO-2005, and CSA-2004, were adopted and used for the calculation. The computed results obtained from these codes were also compared with experimental results conducted by researchers, Khalil et al. (2019), and Shuraim (2012).

Results showed that out of the four codes ACI 318M-08 gave a better result in term of average result in the series of results from Khalil et al. (2019) with 1.68 compared to Eurocode 2-2004, AASHTO-2005 and CSA-2004 with those of 2.02, 1.88, and 1.76, respectively. In term of coefficient of variation (COV) code CSA2004 showed better results with COV of 13.09% compared to ACI 318M-08, Eurocode 2-2004, and AASHTO-2005 with COVs of 15.30%, 26.22%, and 19.55%, respectively.

For the series of results from Shuraim (2012), the prediction results showed that out of the four codes ACI 318M-08 and Eurocode 2-2004 gave better results in term of average result with the same result of 1.75 compared to AASHTO-2005 and CSA-2004 with those of 1.83, and 1.80, respectively. In term of coefficient of variation (COV) Eurocode 2-2004 showed better results with COV of 14.82% compared to ACI 318M-08, AASHTO-2005, and CSA-2004 with COVs of 15.92%, 14.87%, and 15.74%, respectively.
