Abstract

Concrete members are used to ensure that the structural components are able to resist the external loads acting on them. Calculation of beams by following whichever standard code correctly is safe, but it is not certain which code is more economical. Therefore, when designing bending reinforced concrete beams using ACI 318 and Eurocode 2, we will be able to choose which code to get better results.
The design of flexural concrete members using ACI 318 and Eurocode 2 was studied in order to evaluate bending strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams based on these codes. This study presents the comparison between the theoretical calculation based on ACI 318M-19 and Eurocode 2-2004. Furthermore, computer software ETABS 2019 has been used to calculate the rebar area by using these both codes compare to the existing experimental results from literatures.
The results from this study demonstrated that the ratios Mu,exp /Mn,ACI and Mu,exp /MR,EC2 gave an value of 1.120 and 1.192, respectively. The coefficient of variation of Mu, exp/Mn, ACI ratio was 22.9% and the coefficient of variation of Mu, exp / MR, EC2 ratio of 19.8%. The required rebar area was obtained from ETABS 2019 adopted ACI and Eurocode give the coefficient of variation an equal value of 20.2%.
From this study, it can be concluded that the bending moment of RC beams calculated by ACI 318M-19 and Eurocode 2-2004 is given a satisfied result. On the other hand, the bending moment was calculated by Eurocode 2-2004 is slightly better than the ACI 318M-19 code compared to the experimental results. For the calculation of the required rebar area of the beam in the computer program ETABS 2019, both codes are obtained with similar results
